LEARNING BY THE COAST – NORTH COAST PHOTO WALK IN IRELAND

Do you love getting out for a walk by the coast and practicing your photography skills? Each month, I’m arranging a place and date for enthusiasts to meet up and have some fun with their camera or smartphone throughout Ulster.

Our latest photo walk took place on the North Coast of Ireland. To say it was a cold and windy day would be an understatement but it didn’t deter this fantastic bunch of people from turning up. The group consisted of amateur photographers, each with a love for their art. We met close by to Mussenden Temple, and after our introductions, we set off across the fields to the beautiful coast.

Each of the photographers had a different camera and lens so we took time to chat about these as we walked. I love finding out about the students. What they enjoy talking photos of and the challenges that they currently face in terms of perfecting their work.

We started off looking at composition, discussed the importance of the aperture setting on your camera and the difference it makes to your work. Everyone was encouraged to experiment with their aperture setting, either in manual mode or in aperture priority mode. We discussed when to use wider apertures and how they impact on your work.

We also covered the importance of light and the Exposure Triangle. This encompassed the three exposure settings on your camera that come together to give you a properly exposed image – aperture, shutter speed & ISO.

Another topic we discussed was the use of telephoto lens – the difference they make when taking images of people and in landscape photography. I loved sharing tips on the different types of lens – wide angle, macro, portrait and telephoto. We chatted about when it was best to use each and how they can impact on your images.

Time for coffee and chats

Then it was time to warm up with a cuppa and snack. We headed to the coffee bar in the car park and treated ourselves to some hot drinks that brought the feeling back into our fingers! It was so lovely to have a relaxing chat with everyone about photography, holidays and life in general. That was one of the reasons I established the photo walks. To bring people together and help us all reconnect with one another, over a cup of tea or coffee. Life can get isolating at times and what better way to reach out and have some fun.

Then we visited Downhill Beach, situated just below Mussenden. This gave us another perspective and view of the temple. Students were encouraged to think about different compositional techniques when shooting.

‘Catriona picked a fantastic area of the North Coast for our photo walk. Although quite cold and windy, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get out and take some photos. Catriona is a great teacher, very patient and very willing to pass on her knowledge, hints and tips to help us improve.’

Student’s Work

Here are some of the images taken on the day by the students …

‘I really enjoyed Sunday’s Photography walk on the North Coast. It was lovely to meet everyone on the walk and chat to them about their own photography journey. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable morning and I was made feel at ease . Catriona was very patient , helpful and encouraging and took time to explain, demonstrate and answer any questions I asked.’

‘I thoroughly enjoyed the walk and the company and learnt an awful lot along the way. I am now approaching my camera with a lot more confidence and beginning to play around with the different functions, which before were just too scary to touch! You explained everything so clearly and in a way which was so easy to understand. I am looking forward to the online course and learning even more about photography along the way.’
